FAQ wine transport

VinLog offers customised solutions, tailored to each customer, for a sustainable end-to-end service.

For bulk wine, we offer the VinLog Flexitank/Flexibag solution. This is a foldable, easily transported and very resilient ‘bag’ which can be fitted into a standard 20' container and filled with 20,000 to 24,000 lires of liquid. It weighs around 60kg and is suitable for use in temperatures from -20°C to 70°C.

Beverages can either be bottled and packed in crates or transported loose. Therefore, there are different kinds of containers, e.g. standard (20' or 40'), high cube (HC), open top containers or reefer containers.

VinLog offers a one-stop-shop solution that matches your scope and requirements – no matter the size of your business. We work together with small and medium-sized wineries, importers, distributors and multinational brand owners.

VinLog ensures that your wine arrives in perfect condition. As wine is a "living product", it should be moved under temperature and humidity control, avoiding shocks and vibrations as far as possible.

Here you can find the maximum load capacity per container type (20' or 40' container) and loose vs. palletised loading:

  • 20’ Box loose packing = 13,200 bottles 0,75l = 2,200 cartons à 6 bottles
  • 20’ Box palletised = 9,600 bottles 0,75l = 1,600 cartons à 6 bottles
  • 20’ Reefer Box loose packing = 12,000 bottles 0,75l = 2,000 cartons à 6 bottles
  • 40’ Box loose packing = 18,600 bottles 0,75l = 3,100 cartons à 6 bottles
  • 40’ Box palletised = 18,000 bottles 0,75l = 3,000 cartons à 6 bottles
  • 45’ Box palletised = 19,800 bottles 0,75l = 3,300 cartons à 6 bottles

Roughly 9 to 11 pallets fit in a 20 foot container and 21 to 25 pallets in a 40 foot container.

There are different kinds of containers, e.g. standard (20‘ or 40‘), high cube (HC), open top containers or reefer containers with temperature control.

B

Traditionally, “bouquet” is used to describe a wine’s aromas when the wine has aged in the bottle and has begun to exhibit secondary notes.

Bulk wine is defined as a wine that is shipped in containers (ISO tanks, Flexitanks, etc.), rather than in bottles or smaller packaging.

F

The term "full container load" refers to containers that are transported as a whole and sealed for a specific client. This does not necessarily mean that the container must be completely full.

They are one of the most effective transportation methods for bulk cargo, especially designed for the transport of liquid food, e.g. alcohols, fruit juices, edible oils.

It is a "travel agency" for goods or the architect of the supply chain. With Kuehne+Nagel's global network in our back, we arrange door-to-door transports by truck, rail, inland waterways, air and - especially for wine - by sea freight. Other services include warehousing and distribution, customs clearance and transport insurance.

L

Less-than-container load (LCL) is a shipment that is not large enough to fill a standard cargo container.  As such, it is also used as a general reference for identifying cargo in any quantity intended for carriage in a container, where the carrier is responsible for packing and/or unpacking the container. For operational purposes, a LCL container is considered a container in which multiple consignments or parts thereof are shipped.
